Classification of Dangerous Goods

While classifying a substance, chances are it may meet the criteria of more than one hazard class. So, the class with the highest hazard level must be the primary class, and the class with the lower level will be the second class. At El Dorado Shipping, we can help you ship all the below-classified products and minimize the hassles of managing dangerous goods. Here are the class levels for hazardous substances.

Class 1 hazardous products possess the ability to detonate during a chemical reaction. The explosive reactions must be avoided during transit, and the packaging and marking of the cargo are handled with care at EL Dorado Shipping. The class 1 group includes substance and articles which have: Mass explosion hazard Projection hazard but don’t have a mass explosion hazard Fire hazard and either a minor or major blast hazard No or small hazard in the event of ignition during transport Mass explosion hazards but are insensitive in nature Don’t possess a mass explosion hazard but are extremely insensitive A few major examples of explosive dangerous goods include fireworks, flares, and ignitors.

Class 1.1 : Substances and articles which have a mass explosion hazard

Class 1.2 : Substances and articles which have a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard

Class 1.3 : Substances and articles which have a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard

Class 1.4 : Substances and articles which present no significant hazard; only a small hazard in the event of ignition during transport with any effects largely confined to the package

Class 1.5 : Very insensitive substances which have a mass explosion hazard

Class 1.6 : Extremely insensitive articles which do not have a mass explosion hazard

Class 2 dangerous goods consist of compressed gases, mixtures of gases with other vapors, gases in their liquefied form, refrigerated gases, and products charged with gases or aerosols. A few major real-world examples of class 2 hazardous goods are aerosols and fire extinguishers. The division of class is further divided into: Flammable gases, Non-flammable, non-toxic gases and Toxic gases

Class 2.1 : Flammable gases

Class 2.2 : Non-flammable, non-toxic gases

Class 2.3 : Toxic gases

Class 3 dangerous goods storage includes flammable liquids containing solids that require a lower temperature than others to ignite. The flash point of the dangerous goods is not more than 60° Celsius. The volatility and combustibility hold a serious threat, and with El Dorado Shipping , you can escape the tension of shipping these goods from one place to another.

The dangerous goods classification includes easily combustible products liable to spontaneous combustion during transportation. The class 4 flammable solids include metal powders, sodium batteries, etc., as they are difficult to extinguish when on fire. The class is further classified into:

Class 4.1 :These hazardous products will burn more easily than combustible materials. The combustion of the solids is highly dangerous because they can burn vigorously, decompose explosively, and produce toxic gases.

Class 4.2 :These flammable goods can be either solids or liquids and ignite spontaneously with oxygen contact.

Class 4.3 :These dangerous goods categories react with water to create flammable gas that the heat of the reaction can ignite.

The class of hazardous goods is highly combustible because of the release of oxygen, which can fuel the combustion process. A few examples of class 5 classified goods are hydrogen peroxide and lead nitrate.

Class 5.1 :Dangerous goods are oxidizers and may cause or enhance combustion by yielding oxygen.

Class 5.2 :Goods have a molecular structure that’s extremely liable to ignition. They are designed to be reactive and made unstable to be explosive.

The most commonly transported class 6 dangerous goods are cyanides, some pesticides, lead compounds, phenols, cresols, biological samples, and clinical wastes. The class is further categorized into:

Class 6.1 :The toxic substances that are liable to cause death or injuries to human health if inhaled, swallowed, or by skin contact.

Class 6.2 :The infectious substances that contain microorganisms responsible for causing infectious diseases in humans or animals. They can be expected to contain pathogens.

Material containing radionuclides where the total activity and activity concentration exceed certain pre-defined values are radioactive. The radioactive shipping must be highly secure and carefully handled, and our experts have experience managing shipping projects of such stature.

Due to their high reactivity, corrosive substances can degrade other materials when in contact. Corrosive substances can also cause damage when in contact with the skin.. At El Dorado Shipping, we take highly preventive measures to avoid the risk of shipping corrosive substances.

Class 9 hazmat labels include dangerous substances not covered in the other classes. The common class 9 dangerous goods storage requirements include items with anesthetic properties, life rafts, solid dry ice, asbestos, and chain saws. Our team has the knowledge and experience to manage and safely ship these products to their destinations.
